Mexican national team limps as final round of World Cup qualifying is set to begin. Under Sven-Göran Eriksson, Mexico hasn't won in 4 games and looks uninspired. Banged up and missing players, Mexico takes on the U.S. in Columbus on Feb. 11
Somewhere, Hugo Sánchez is smiling.
The former Mexican national-team coach probably isn't enthused watching El Tricolor in its current beleaguered state. But Sánchez, now in charge of Spanish side Almería, can rest assured over one thing: The problems with El Tri run deeper than the coach.
There are less than two weeks to go until Mexico's first match in CONCACAF's final Hexagonal round of 2010 World Cup qualifying: a harrowing trip to Columbus, Ohio, to face the U.S. And already, Mexico is threatening to spiral out of control.
Wednesday's 1-0 friendly loss to Sweden in Oakland, Calif., only reaffirms the doubts about the team itself due to poor execution and results. Mexico dropped two of its last three qualifiers and failed to win away from home during the semifinal phase of qualifying a year ago. The team's lack of creativity and penchant for mistakes are as strong as ever, and without some talented and experienced players available for the U.S. game, all the pieces are in place for a spectacular implosion.
Still, the one area where El Tri isn't lacking apparently is confidence. While it may not seem that way to many observers, Mexico coach Sven-Göran Eriksson said his team has improved when playing road games.
Under the Swede, El Tri has just one win in six tries outside of Mexico. Three away qualifiers yielded one point and two shutout losses, while three friendlies on U.S. soil netted a pair of 1-0 losses and a 2-1 win over Ecuador.
"I think we are making progress every time we play away," Eriksson said after the Sweden loss. "We played at Jamaica a month ago. That was awful. We didn't try to play football. I don't think we tried to attack the open ends. We were just standing there like a boxer. They punched us. But for every game after that, we are doing better and better. I'm sure we are going to give the United States a great game."
Still, Eriksson is learning what Sánchez learned before him: Mexico is devoid of a superstar, a player who can instantly rally the troops with his leadership and skill and can take over a match at the drop of a hat. Cuauhtémoc Blanco and Jared Borgetti fit that mold for several years, but towards the end of the Sánchez era, they couldn't perform any longer to the levels they set for themselves.
Also, Mexico lacks options in the attack. Sánchez also realized that when he called in foreign-born players Antonio "Zinha" Naelson and Guillermo Franco, both of whom drew his ire when the pair was called up by his predecessor, Ricardo Lavolpe.
Two players who many have pegged as future national-team stars likely will have no role in the U.S. match, and how much they figure into the Hexagonal in general remains to be seen. Former Under-17 starlets Giovani dos Santos and Carlos Vela gave hope they would develop into world-class players, but that hasn't happened yet.
Vela is unavailable because of a foolish red card he picked up near the end of Mexico's 1-0 qualifying loss to Honduras in November. Dos Santos, meanwhile, is nowhere near the form necessary to compete in World Cup qualifying, and Eriksson seemed doubtful whether he'd even call on the youngster at all.
"Of course I would pick him," Eriksson said. "He's a great player. He's 19 years old, but he's very good. And we need that kind of players. I was speaking to him and his manager. He's having a difficult time. He's not playing very much so I don't know exactly what has happened. There have been talks about changing clubs at the end of the season. It's important for us that he starts to play football. Otherwise it is very difficult to pick him and, for a football education at 19, 20 years old, you have to play."
Dos Santos or not, Mexico will have to maximize its attacking options. Goals haven't been at a premium under Eriksson as El Tri has scored more than two goals just once, in a 3-0 victory over Jamaica last September. Ironically, though, at least two of the scorers from that game have no chance of playing against the U.S. Injured Andrés Guardado has been ruled out while Fernando Arce is suspended for the match, along with Vela and Gerardo Torrado.
Defender Jonny Magallón, who scored twice against the U.S. in a friendly last February in Houston, hasn't played since October due to injury and, although he's recovering, quickly seems in doubt to earn a call-up and playing time for the game.
Mexico's problems seem vast, but what compounds the issue even more is its opponent: It hasn't beaten the U.S. on American soil in a decade. Worse, Mexico hasn't won a road qualifier against the U.S. since 1972.
Still, the Eriksson is confident that Mexico can come away with a victory. "I think we are doing better and better in every away game," he said. "The attitude is better. We fight better, we create more and more occasions. So someday it will happen."

Hugo les exige como él se exigía

La mañana que mi compañero Juan Jiménez y quien esto escribe nos acercamos hasta Almería para entrevistar a Hugo Sánchez vimos su modus operandi.
Lunes. Diez de la mañana.
Visionado de vídeos para corregir errores. Charla de prevención (sirve para aprender a evitar lesiones). Dos horas de trabajo. Suave, pero trabajo al fin y al cabo. Y cuando todo terminó, el entrenador mexicano se puso a correr alrededor del campo. Nosotros sólo sudábamos de verle y él, tan fresco. A sus increíbles 50 años está fenomenal.
Para finalizar, relajante y merecida ducha. Cuando terminamos la mencionada entrevista, nos percatamos de que la jornada de trabajo del Almería aquella mañana había durado ¡cinco horas! Hugo Sánchez lo tiene claro. Sin trabajo no hay resultados.
En su etapa como futbolitsta en el Real Madrid Hugo Sánchez era de los que más se exigían a sí mismo. Cuando terminaba el entrenamiento siempre se quedaba corriendo, haciendo abdominales, en el gimnasio, o en la sala de masajes.
Y mientras Schuster, casi sin ducharse, era el primero en irse pitando para su casa. Ni que decir tiene que era siempre el último en abandonar la Ciudad Deportiva madridista. El Señor del gol pide a sus jugadores lo mismo que él a si mismo. Y los profesionales le respetan y le admiran. Se quedan impactados cuando les explica cómo mejorar en la técnica de una buena chilena o cómo ser más ofensivos.
Hugo Sánchez ha venido a trabajar. Y los resultados se empiezan a notar. Transmite carisma e ilusión. Y México está pendiente de él

Almería 2-1 Athletic de Bilbao

El Almería, que dirige el mexicano Hugo Sánchez, se impuso al Athletic de Bilbao (2-1) y se alejó del peligro de la zona baja para asentarse en aguas más tranquilas de la clasificación, al tiempo que frena las aspiraciones del rival.
En la primera parte, el equipo local buscó el triunfo ante un Athletic casi indolente que salió al campo con un once inédito, tal vez pensando más en la Copa que en la Liga.
Aun así, el conjunto andaluz no encontró hueco hasta pasado el primer cuarto de hora, en el minuto 16, con un pase de Bruno sobre Álvaro Negredo, que despejó a corner Ustaritz tras un mal control del goleador rojiblanco.En el minuto 21, pudo marcar el Almería en una acción de Negredo, que vio a Gorka Iraizoz adelantado y buscó el disparo desde lejos para sorprender sin suerte.El conjunto de Hugo Sánchez controlaba el balón, pero no conseguía hacer daño y fue el brasileño Iriney santos quien tomó la iniciativa, en el 25 para desnivelar justamente el marcador y aunque su disparo no entró, se estrelló en el larguero y el rechace lo cabeceó Juanma Ortiz a la red.El Athletic no reaccionó y el Almería casi mató el partido, en una acción de Negredo, que disparó casi de chilena, el rechace dio en la mano de Ustaritz Aldekoaotalora, el Árbitro dejó continuar la jugada y la pelota le llegó al nigeriano Kalu Uche para que pusiera el 2-0.
En la segunda parte del encuentro, el Athletic salió con otro aire y Joseba Del Olmo, en el minuto 46, dio un peligroso aviso y pudo marcar, pero lo impidió el meta brasileño Diego Alves.Sin embargo, en el minuto 65, un balón en largo lo cabeceó Gaizka Toquero y esta vez Del Olmo finalizó la contra con el 2-1 ante la impotencia de Diego Alves.Los bilbaínos se mostraron nerviosos y con prisa por empatar, mientras que los almerienses trataron de ordenarse atrás y conservar su ventaja.Pudieron los andaluces elevar su renta en el minuto 68 con un pase de Soriano que remató Juanma Ortiz y que despejó Iraizoz, y dispusieron de otra ocasión en el 77, en un centro del argentino Pablo Piatti sobre Juanma Ortiz, que otra vez, que disparó fuera.Hasta el final del choque, el Athletic de Bilbao sólo se encargó de colgar balones al área que siempre consiguió sacar bien el Almería, con un buen trabajo en defensa.

Empate justo en un partido trabado y bronco. El Almería se adelantó e igualó Sinama. Los de Hugo, con diez desde el 53'. Banega fue expulsado al final.
El primer duelo de entrenadores mexicanos de la historia de la Liga fue macho, muy macho.
Hubo patadas y empujones, broncas y expulsados, tensión e intensidad permanente. Como combate de lucha libre habría hecho furor. Ahora bien, como partido de fútbol fue una castaña. Pilonga. Pero el duelo lo ganó Hugo, que se llevó un puntito que a su Almería le sabe a gloria después de haber jugado con uno menos 36 minutos. El empate al Atleti apenas le vale para mantenerse por los pelos en la zona UEFA, empatado con el Málaga al que visita el domingo. La nota final de su primera vuelta es un suspenso como una catedral. Por puntos, por juego y por actitud.
Porque ayer volvió a salir a jugar un partido de Primera como si fuera una pachanga de solteros contra casados y, además, ellos fueron los casados. Esta tradición, imperdonable en cualquier equipo profesional, resulta ya una seña de identidad de este Atleti y los rivales lo saben. Así que el Almería le devoró desde el pitido inicial y a los seis minutos ya había marcado. En ello colaboraron, como también es habitual, los errores individuales de la defensa madrileña: Antonio López falló al despejar un balón y Leo Franco rechazó el primer disparo de Uche exactamente como no se debe hacer: blandito y al centro del área. El nigeriano le fusiló mientras le daba las gracias.
Ni así despertaron los de Aguirre, que siguieron deambulando por el campo como almas en pena hasta el minuto 22, cuando su gran, quizás única, virtud futbolística volvió a emerger: cero méritos, un gol. Antonio López lanzó una falta desde la derecha y Sinama cabecea ante la mala salida de Alves. El francés, pese a cierta sobreexcitación que le tuvo toda la noche al borde de meterse en un lío, demostró que puede funcionar bien como volante derecho cuando falte Maxi.
El gol visitante frenó el ímpetu del Almería, donde Negredo nunca encontró su sitio, y a falta de fútbol la cosa empezó a calentarse para desgracia de Delgado Ferreiro, absolutamente superado en cada acción, incapaz de frenar la escalada de brusquedad. Hasta el descanso, sólo dos detalles futbolísticos. Primero, un córner en el que Sinama amagó con sacar y rozó el balón antes de irse de allí para dejar que lo hiciera Simao, pero desde este año con rozarlo basta para ponerlo en juego, así que el portugués cogió y salió jugando como si nada ante la sorpresa general. La cosa quedó en nada, pero fue novedoso ver al Atleti como pionero en algo. Positivo, digo. Para acabar, un ataque de ira de Forlán que esprintó desde su campo con el balón evitando rivales hasta, asfixiado, fallar ante Alves.
Tras el descanso, el Atleti salió del vestuario con la misma caraja que al inicio y el Almería pudo marcar tras una preciosa cola de vaca de Uche y una peligrosa falta cometida por Pablo al intentar despejar como mandan los cánones: con los ojos cerrados, la mano extendida hacia el balón y arrollando al rival. Pero entonces Pellerano, que llevaba toda la noche defendiendo a Agüero a base de faltas, vio la segunda amarilla más por reiteración que por la infracción en sí. Y el panorama cambio de inmediato.

Nada más producirse la expulsión, Pablo cabeceó al larguero y Kun desvió un disparo de Banega para rozar el palo. No tuvo suerte ayer Agüero, que fallaría la definición en el 74' tras una gran maniobra, pero su partido fue loable, insistente y peligroso pese al brusco marcaje que sufrió. El chico, además de genial, es duro. Como orgulloso es Forlán, que salvó el 2-1 al cruzarse el campo entero a la carrera para evitar que Crusat fusilara a Leo tras un error garrafal de Banega en un córner a favor de los suyos. Un Banega que, por cierto, acabó expulsado destrozando otra vez su oportunidad de asentarse en el once. No madura.
En el último instante, Alves hizo olvidar su error en el gol con un paradón ante Forlán. La victoria visitante no hubiera sido justa. Los dos jugaron igual de mal, aunque sólo el Almería tiene excusa: inferioridad numérica y, a priori, de talento.
Así que Hugo ganó a los puntos, los mismos que le faltan a Aguirre para dormir tranquilo.

Javier Aguirre leads Atletico Madrid against Hugo Sanchez's Almeria in the first all-Mexican coaching matchup in the Spanish league, which hits the halfway point with this weekend's round of games.
Atletico is still looking for its first victory of 2009 after slumping to a fourth straight defeat on Wednesday, a 2-1 loss to Barcelona that dumped it out of the Copa del Rey.Atletico, which lies fifth on 30 points, could be without striker Sergio Aguero who limped out of the match at the Camp Nou.
Sanchez's reign at Almeria has so far produced one victory and a draw in two league games, lifting the club to 14th with 20 points - five above the drop zone.
Almeria bowed out of the domestic cup competition to second-last Mallorca, but the former Mexico coach and Real Madrid striker isn't worried about that affecting the team's performance come Sunday.
"The league and the cup are different tournaments. The two cup matches we played in one way and those in the league another," Sanchez said. "What we hope for is to win the next two league matches that we have at home. That's our objective."

Almeria bowed out of the domestic cup competition to second-last Mallorca, but the former Mexico coach and Real Madrid striker isn't worried about that affecting the team's performance come Sunday.
"The league and the cup are different tournaments. The two cup matches we played in one way and those in the league another," Sanchez said. "What we hope for is to win the next two league matches that we have at home. That's our objective."

Mexico's 2009 Clausura Championship is just hours away, and the country's two most popular sides, Guadalajara and America, have spent big in the close season to avoid a repeat of last year's disappointments.
Yet even with strengthened squads, these Mexican powerhouses will have their work cut out to secure the title, with last year's Apertura champions Toluca having kept their impressive squad intact. Furthermore, the likes of Cruz Azul, UNAM Pumas, Pachuca and Morelia all have aspirations of their own, having gone varying amounts of time without a Primera Division title.
Group 1: Tough to call
On paper at least, two clubs look capable of dominating this section: Santos Laguna, a semi-finalist last time out, and perennial candidates Pachuca. That said, the former have lost two of their best defenders in Fernando Ortiz and Edgar Castillo, while Los Tuzos will face the additional task of trying to balance their league and Copa Libertadores commitments.
This could provide an opening for Atlante, who surprised many by making the Apertura semis last year with a balanced side and no big-name stars. Also fancying their chances will be Monterrey, despite recently parting company with coach Ricardo La Volpe because of financial differences. Completing the group are two clubs with serious relegation concerns, Indios Juarez and Puebla, meaning the pair will be waging their own private battle against the drop every step of the way.

Javier Aguirre reconoció este sábado que treinta puntos, que son los que tiene el Atlético a falta de una jornada para llegar al ecuador de la Liga BBVA, "son pocos para aspirar" a la Liga de Campeones, por lo que su equipo "irá a por el partido" en Almería, donde quiere un conjunto "compacto, ambicioso y que luche intensamente". "Intentamos siempre ir a por los partidos, juegue quien juegue. Entendemos que treinta puntos son pocos para aspirar a Champions, que anda en 64 ó 65 históricamente. Entonces, 33 sería la mitad y matemáticamente algo bueno. Dejando escapar puntos en casa como ante el Athletic, metiendo la pata como el otro día, tenemos la obligación de ir a por los tres puntos", subrayó.
El técnico quiere en Almería que el Atlético dé "una imagen de equipo compacto, sólido, que corra mucho y que compita". "Luego puedes ganar o perder, da en el palo, la sacó en el arquero, el árbitro no ve ésta... Pero para quedarnos tranquilos, no sólo yo sino todo el mundo, que este equipo luche intensamente, defienda al Atlético de Madrid, defienda su puesto y sea ambicioso", continuó Aguirre, quien consideró que su equipo "anímicamente no tiene pretextos" para el encuentro contra el Almería, al que calificó como "un rival de cuidado en su campo". "Vino Hugo Sánchez ganaron y luego empataron con el Espanyol. Es un equipo que está en franca mejoría y no va a ser fácil", recordó.
El Atlético llegará a la cita tras mejorar su imagen en el último partido. "Vamos a ver futbolísticamente cómo estamos, pero anímicamente el equipo se dio un respiro, aunque les he dicho a los jugadores que no se acostumbren a perder, aunque sean derrotas dignas. No valen para nada derrotas dignas", advirtió Aguirre. "Estamos fuera de la Copa y, bajo ese esquema, estamos jodidos, pero el equipo dijo hice lo que pude, enfrente estuvo un gran rival y tuve mis ocasiones, porque no fue como el 6-1 que no olimos ni la pelota. Ahora no, hicimos el 0-1, tuvimos el 0-2 y el 1-2... competimos. Sí da la sensación de que el equipo en lo anímico dio un paso hacia adelante", prosiguió.
Defensa más adelantada
En ese compromiso de Copa, el Atlético adelantó su defensa. "El Barcelona es un rival que juega desde atrás y pocos equipos en España lo hacen. Siempre la tiran todos y eso te impide presionar adelante, pero teniendo una zaga tan rápida, porque Ujfalusi, Pablo, Perea y Antonio López son de los más rápidos del equipo y de la Liga, puedes correr algún riesgo dejando espacios, aunque Crusat, Juanma y Uche son muy veloces", concluyóAguirre.

Cuauhtémoc, podria jugar en Puebla

Bueno que el Cuau en sus tiempos libres logre sacarles una muy buena cantidad de dinero a los "honestos" directivos del Puebla y que recupere para los futbolistas el beneficio que a muchos otros jugadores y la mayoria jóvenes mexicanos se los niegan. Por otra parte la posible contratacion de Blanco es mas bién politica y economica, pero que no va a beneficiar en nada al equipo, ya que el Cuau solamente estaria por unos pocos meses ya que tiene que regresar a Chicago y a su salida creará problemas ya que nadie podrá substituirlo. Ojalá la directiva del Puebla invirtiera en las fuerzas inferiores en desarrollar el talento mexicano lo que tanto gasta en dinero para publicidad y grilla.
A continuación una nota de un periodico mexicano sobre éste asunto.
El directivo del equipo de La Franja, Ricardo Henaine, aceptó que sí hay un acercamiento concreto para hacerse de los servicios de Cuauhtémoc Blanco, pero antes de imaginarlo poniéndose la del Puebla, la directiva camotera tendrá que hacer los trámites con la Federación Mexicana de Futbol.
"La moneda está en el aire, hay que cruzar los dedos. Cuauhtémoc Blanco ya jugó con el Chicago y con Santos, pero son diferentes las fechas entre el torneo de Estados Unidos y el nuestro, entonces tendremos que ver eso con la federación", mencionó el directivo.Las posibilidades de que Cuauhtémoc llegue a Puebla son reales y confesó que ya existen pláticas con los dirigentes de nuestro futbol.
"Acabo de tener una plática con Decio de María para ver cómo podría ser el trámite legal de registrar a Cuauhtémoc. Ya tenemos un acuerdo económico con él, incluso Froylán Hernández, jugador de nuestra filial Lobos BUAP, se lesionó de la rodilla la semana pasada y será baja todo el torneo. Entonces, por ese lado puede ser, pero el problema tal vez sean los calendarios", indicó.
"Si logramos esto, pues lograríamos algo bueno para el equipo y el futbol mexicano y así ya me evito críticas. A Cuauhtémoc le gusta la ciudad, el entrenador y el ambiente, está en buena disposición de venir y nada más nos falta la bendición de la federación", finalizó.
EL REGLAMENTO DE FIFA LO AVALA
El delantero del Fire puede jugar
UN tanto confuso puede resultar el reglamento para entender la situación de Cuauhtémoc Blanco, considerado por el Puebla para el torneo que está por iniciar, cuando, en menos de un año ya estuvo con el Chicago Fire de la MLS y el Santos de Torreón, del torneo mexicano.
Si se enrola con el Puebla, hay que ver lo que dice el reglamento de la FIFA al respecto. Artículo 5, inciso 3:
"Los jugadores pueden estar inscritos en un máximo de tres clubes durante una temporada. Durante ese periodo el jugador es elegible para jugar partidos oficiales solamente por dos clubes.
Como excepción a esta regla, un jugador que juega en dos clubes pertenecientes a asociaciones cuyas temporadas se crucen -es decir, donde las temporadas comiencen en el verano/otoño mientras la otra inicie en el invierno/primavera- puede ser elegible para jugar partidos oficiales en un tercer club durante la temporada que corresponda, siempre que haya cumplido cabalmente sus obligaciones contractuales con sus clubes anteriores. Asimismo, han de respetarse las disposiciones sobre los periodos de inscripción, así como la duración mínima de un contrato".
De esta forma, fue necesario conocer también el punto de vista de Decio de María, Secretario General de la FMF: "Como lo plantea el Puebla, no veo impedimento alguno para que el señor Cuauhtémoc Blanco pueda jugar con el Puebla".
Por su parte, el directivo del Puebla, Ricardo Henaine, señaló lo siguiente: "Ya está todo cerrado, sólo esperamos que la Federación lo autorice y se hagan los ajustes necesarios. Por nuestro lado ya está todo hecho y sólo falta el visto bueno de la FIFA y la FMF, porque está todo muy cerca. Ya hablé con Cuauhtémoc y el tema del dinero está solucionado. Está realmente contento el jugador. Ocupará el lugar de un elemento que tenemos lesionado y jugaría ocho o nueve partidos con nosotros. Se puede hacer alguna excepción a la regla como ya lo han hecho y de ser así, Blanco se quedaría en el Puebla. Cruzo los dedos porque sería un gran triunfo para el Puebla".
LOS CAMOTEROS ESTÁN FELICES
Cuau, de acuerdo en lo económico
El Puebla se ilusiona en tener a Cuauhtémoc Blanco en sus filas. El jugador se deja querer y dice 'sí'. Lo que falta es solucionar todo en la FIFA.
Jesús López Chargoy, directivo camotero, mencionó que se tuvo acercamiento ante la Federación Mexicana de Futbol (FMF), vía Enrique Bonilla, quien será el encargado de buscar una solución ante el máximo organismo del futbol mundial.
"Cuauhtémoc le interesa a cualquier equipo y el Puebla no es la excepción, pero en este momento hay que verlo meramente como una posibilidad", afirmó López Chargoy, a quien, sin duda, le agradaría ver a Blanco enfundado en la playera blanquiazul, sobre todo porque el jugador tiene deseos de venir. En el mismo tenor, Ricardo Henaine Mezher, presidente ejecutivo del Puebla, aceptó que Cuauhtémoc está de acuerdo en el aspecto económico y solamente espera, al igual que los directivos, que haya una solución positiva por parte de la FMF.
"Se ha hecho un gran esfuerzo por armar el plantel, y si logramos traer a Cuauhtémoc sería la cereza, porque el pastelote ya lo tenemos", subrayó López Chargoy.

Aguirre worried about Aguero fitness

Atletico Madrid coach Javier Aguirre has said he is worried about the fitness of Argentina striker Sergio Aguero.
The Primera Liga side's most gifted player, 20, has been struggling with a lingering groin injury and has not looked sharp.
"This injury causes persistent pain. It doesn't stop you playing but if you overdo it, it eats away at your fitness and morale," Aguirre said in an interview with Spanish sports daily Marca on Tuesday.
"He is young and has just started dealing with it, but he doesn't have much experience. I want to protect him." Aguirre added he had no intention of quitting despite home fans calling for his sacking after three consecutive defeats last week that have lead Atletico to slip out of the top four and left them with a mountain to climb in the King's Cup.

Atletico Madrid coach Javier Aguirre has said he is worried about the fitness of Argentina striker Sergio Aguero.
The Primera Liga side's most gifted player, 20, has been struggling with a lingering groin injury and has not looked sharp.
"This injury causes persistent pain. It doesn't stop you playing but if you overdo it, it eats away at your fitness and morale," Aguirre said in an interview with Spanish sports daily Marca on Tuesday.
"He is young and has just started dealing with it, but he doesn't have much experience. I want to protect him." Aguirre added he had no intention of quitting despite home fans calling for his sacking after three consecutive defeats last week that have lead Atletico to slip out of the top four and left them with a mountain to climb in the King's Cup.

When I look back now, I realise that I owe everything to Carlo Mazzone and Carlo Ancelotti, the two most important coaches that I've ever had.
AC Milan and Italy star Andrea Pirlo on the coaches who have shaped his career
Despite not yet having turned 30, Andrea Pirlo is very much a Serie A stalwart. Il Architetto - the architect, as he is known - has made 303 appearances in Italy's top flight, including no fewer than 213 for AC Milan, as well as playing in 77 UEFA Champions League matches.
He made his debut at the tender age of 16 for Brescia on 21 May 1995, and moved on to Inter Milan and Reggina before settling with AC Milan, for whom he has been plying his trade since 2001.
Over the past seven seasons, Pirlo has built up the kind of trophy cabinet that most players can only dream of. On the domestic front, he has won the FIFA Club World Cup (in 2007), two UEFA Champions Leagues (2003 and 2007), two European Supercups (2003 and 2007), a Scudetto (2004), an Italian Supercup (2004) and to round it off, the Italian Cup in 2003. On the international front. Pirlo first represented his country at U-15 level and since then has gone on to win the FIFA World Cup™ in 2006, the European U-21 championship in 2000 and a bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. FIFA.com caught up with the Italian legend at the famous Milanello training centre.
You played your first ever Serie A match when you were 16 years and two days old. What do you remember about your debut?
It was a very emotional moment. I didn't feel under any particular pressure because I knew that there would be other matches. Making a name for yourself in clubs who give youth a chance or who are in mid-table is important for a young player. It means that you can play regularly and get some absolutely invaluable experience at that age.
You were an attacking midfielder when you started out, but then Carlo Mazzone and Carlo Ancelotti began to play you further back. How did this change of position affect your career?
I loved playing there. I already used to track back to go and get the ball, so it was easy to adapt. It means that I am right at the heart of what's going on. When I look back now, I realise that I owe everything to Carlo Mazzone and Carlo Ancelotti, the two most important coaches that I've ever had. Under Ancelotti I got right into the role straight away because he trusted me even though he had more experienced players available to him.
You have won a Scudetto, two UEFA Champions Leagues, two UEFA Supercups, a FIFA Club World Cup... After so much club success, what more can you possibly get out of football?
I want to win other trophies. Football is a sport where you always need to have fun, improve and win things. There are titles up for grabs every year, and it's up to us to go out and win them. At Milan I really feel at home at what is the most important club in the world, so I have no desire to go and try out different experiences as I've got all that I need here.
What are the fundamental differences between AC and Inter Milan?
When I was at Inter (1998-1999 and then 2000 - January 2001), it was a club that was searching for its identity. There were a lot of comings and goings and in particular a number of coaches who were relieved of their duties. AC Milan on the other hand has always been a model club in terms of success and also the way it is organised. When I was at Inter, they weren't ready to be on the same level as AC Milan.
Moving on to Italy now. How do you think that the Squadra Azzurra has performed so far in the qualifiers for the 2010 FIFA World Cup?
We've got off to a very good start with some important wins. We're currently top of the group and we're looking to stay there to make sure that we qualify directly for South Africa.
What are the differences between the team under Marcello Lippi in 2006 and since he came back in 2008?
The squad in 2006 was a great team made up of players who had proven themselves at the highest level. The team hoping to qualify for 2010 has more players who are journeying into the unknown. You can't really judge the current team yet as it's just building up and starting to show its potential, due in no small part to the enthusiasm that the return of Lippi has created. We need to have the same desire we had in 2006 and above all the same aims, particularly as we all want to put the failure of the last EURO behind us.
What is your secret to all the goals you score from free-kicks?
I've always watched video cassettes of the all-time greats, and then I was lucky enough to play alongside one - Roberto Baggio - who gave me some excellent advice. Finally, there is some natural talent in there and a lot of work obviously goes into it during training sessions.
What is your opinion of football today?
It has changed a lot. All the teams are well organised and competitive these days. There aren't any weaker teams any more and you don't get five or six-goal wins every week as was the case a few years ago. We need to be focussed and give 100 per cent all the time, otherwise we could be in for a surprise.
You come across as someone who is very serious. What is the real Andrea Pirlo like?
I like to have a laugh, enjoy myself and tease other people. Those who don't know me very well don't realise this - either they haven't got to know me well enough or I haven't yet got round to trusting them. With time, they get to find out what I'm really like (to which an AC Milan executive adds with a smile "crazy"). Here at AC Milan though, Gennaro Gattuso is obviously the real joker in the pack.
What hobbies do you have?
I like spending time with my family, with my wife and kids. When I go away for training camps though, I play football video games with Alessandro Nesta. I always play as AC Milan and Nesta picks another team. But the real Pirlo can't be imitated, even on a game console (laughs).
Is there anything else you particularly want to talk about?
I'm sorry, I'm not much of a talker...I already feel like I've been talking too much (laughs).

Portugal and Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo held his FIFA World Player of the Year trophy with pride after receiving his award on 12 January 2009 at the Zurich Opera House.
It's no surprise that the dazzling winger was feeling a proud man as the names of previous winners of the global prize read like a who's-who list of the beautiful game's true legends.
Seconds after picking up his prize, the best player in the world for the year 2008 shared his feelings exclusively with FIFA.com. "I feel great, this is a fantastic moment for me," said the forward "I am very happy. It's amazing to receive this award for what I did in 2008," he added, with the trophy firmly gripped between his hands.Of course, the world doesn't end with the year and Ronaldo is looking forward to 2009 and he is hoping to repeat his exploits. "I expect to do the same this season. To play well, win trophies collectively and individually as I did last season. I had a great time with my United teammates and I expect and we can repeat it".
In closing, Ronaldo chose his favorite moment of 2008. "It has to be when we (United) won the Champions League. It was the best moment not just for me, also for my colleagues and my boss. To achieve that was great and I hope to repeat it this year."

Hugo Sánchez afirmó que el partido que disputarán el próximo domingo ante el Espanyol tiene en juego seis puntos al enfrentarse dos rivales directos. "Podríamos decir que en un duelo directo con ellos estamos hablando de seis puntos, los que se suman como los que les quita al rival.
Por eso, hay que ir motivados por ese lado y con las precauciones suficientes porque ellos estarán pensando lo mismo", argumentó el técnico del Almería. Hugo Sánchez añadió que procura no pensar en el rival aunque sí respetarlo y señaló que "jugar en casa es un factor importante a su favor". "Ellos están un poquito más necesitados que nosotros, pero nosotros vamos a ir a hacer nuestra propia campaña y con la idea de conseguir tres puntos porque mientras que sumemos de tres en tres esto tiene un valor muy fuerte", agregó Hugo Sánchez.

Hugo Sánchez se estrenó con el Almería con victoria. El conjunto rojiblanco recuperó la senda del triunfo, algo que se le resistía desde hacía casi dos meses. Pero el técnico no quiere ninguna relajación ni un descanso. El mexicano reconoció que el partido no había sido bueno y que la fortuna sonrió de forma clara a su equipo, una circunstancia de la que siempre se habían quejado durante toda la temporada en el seno del vestuario almeriense.
“Ha vuelto la fortuna”, declaró un Diego Alves que lo comprobó en sus propias carnes al ver como dos remates del Betis —de Emaná y Sergio García— se estrellaban en su larguero.
Además de tener a la suerte de su lado, el sentir del plantel rojiblanco, en su mayoría, es la de haber recuperado la ilusión. “Hugo Sánchez nos ha dado la confianza que habíamos perdido en las últimas semanas”, declaraba Juanma Ortiz. El técnico mexicano era lo que tenía más claro cuando se hizo cargo del plantel en lugar del donostiarra Gonzalo Arconada.
Miguel Ángel Corona, además, ha visto este cambio no sólo entre sus compañeros, también en el ambiente que rodea el entorno del Almería. “Se notó en el apoyo del público. Nosotros hemos dicho que deben ser el jugador número 12 y ante el Betis volvieron a serlo. Los aficionados también han recuperado la ilusión”, decía en Radio Marca.
